Leonas start with an easy win

By Eric Weil / For The Herald

The national women’s hockey team, commonly known as the Leonas, started their World League campaign with an easy 2-0 win against Chile in their semi-final in Johannesburg. Noel Barrionuevo and Agustina Habif scored the goals. In practice matches before the tournament, they had beaten Germany 2-1 and lost 1-0 to England.

The Metropolitan championships had their usual week off around July 9 and the first stage ends this weekend when both the women’s and men’s tournaments play the 15th and final round of fixtures. Then the top 10 play-off for the title and the bottom six play together with the top six of the Division B in a sort of reclassification set of matches.

But the Argentine Hockey Confederation (CAH) made the mistake of top-10 teams not carrying over the points already obtained. As a result, there were a lot of games played in which teams had nothing to play for, as by the 14th round most teams were already sure of a top-10 place. On top of that, at the end the top four will play-off for the title, a process which I have always considered useless as the title should go to the team finishing in first place.

River Plate won the women’s national championship for the third time running. They beat Italiano (not the bottom Metropolitan Championship club) 2-0. River Plate are also Metropolitan women’s champions.
