INDEC: unemployment climbs to 9.2 percent

The unemployment rate climbed to 9.2 percent in the first quarter of 2017, the INDEC national statistics bureau reported on Wednesday.

This figure is an increase from the 7.6 percent rate of unemployment registered in the last quarter of 2016. However, there is no inter-annual comparison due to the reforms at INDEC implemented by President Mauricio Macri’s administration at the end of 2016.

The quarterly unemployment rate is highly variable and fluctuates depending on the season. In the second quarter of 2016, for example, unemployment was 9.3 percent, in the third it was 8.5 percent and the in the fourth it had fallen to 7.6 percent. The employment rate then was 41.3 percent of the population.

The statistics are based on the Permanent Homes Survey (EPH), conducted across 31 metropolitan centres in the country.
