‘We don’t have the power to order companies to freeze layoffs,’ UIA warns

After an agreement reached yesterday by the government, union leaders and business chambers to freeze job layoffs until March, the vice president of the Argentine Industrial Union Daniel Funes de Rioja today said the organization does not have the power to prevent companies from firing people.

"It’s not reasonable to tell companies they cannot fire people when it’s a right they have, amid the problems of production and exports they are going through,” he warned. “A dismissal is not a wish but a need,” he added.
