Obama decries 'calculated, despicable attack'

US President Barack Obama pauses as he speaks on the shooting in Dallas, Texas, on the sidelines of the NATO Summit at a hotel in Warsaw, Poland.

n Poland for a NATO summit, US President Barack Obama called the Dallas shooting "a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement."

Obama, who has been stymied by the Republican-led Congress in his bid for new gun control laws, added, "We also know when people are armed with powerful weapons unfortunately it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic."

Meanwhile, the Black Lives Matter movement said the group advocated dignity, not murder, in response to the shooting in Dallas that killed five police officers and wounded seven more.

"#BlackLivesMatter advocates dignity, justice and freedom. Not murder," @Blklivesmatter - the main Twitter account associated with the movement - tweeted.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown told reporters earlier today that the gunman cited the anti-police-violence movement, but also said he was not part of a larger organization.
