President Macri to meet China's Xi on margins of Nuclear Summit

A first official meeting between Mauricio Macri and Xi Jinping will take place next week in Washington.

According to the Télam state run news agency, President Mauricio Macri will be holding a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on April 1 on the margins of the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit to be held in Washington, United States next week.

Since taking office in December, the Mauricio Macri administration has expressed its willingness to set an official encounter between both leaders – China is Argentina’s second export partner after Brazil.

The government of the People’s Republic of China, however, held its decision on the bilateral meeting following Macri’s statements that he was determined to look over the agreements signed between Buenos Aires and Beijing during the administration of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

In 2015, both countries signed a series of accords involving the building of two new nuclear stations, accounting for an investment of 15 billion dollars.

Meanwhile, a day before the summit, on April 30, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra will be meeting with US State Secretary John Kerry, an encounter that will take place a week after US President Barack Obama visited Argentina.
