At least one dead as 5.9 quake hits Salta

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the province of Salta in the northern area of the country, claiming so far the life of one woman who lived in the locality of El Galpón, 160 km away from the provincial capital city. The tremor was felt also in the provinces of Tucumán, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero and Córdoba.

The woman was 90 years old and has been identified as Alberta Flores, the state-run news agency Télam said today.

According to the available information, she lived in a house located in front of the local bus station, collapsing completely when the quake hit the province.

“It is a complete chaos; we have houses falling down, neighbours affected due to the fall of construction blocks. In the hospital, we have a lot of injured people, we have no light or water,” the major of El Galpón Héctor Romero told reporters working on the site.

“I was in my house and I felt a strong movement and noise; I took my kids away from the house that had the roof cracking. I went outside and I found the destruction of the school. Thank God it is Saturday; if it were a normal day of classes, we would be regretting the death of lots of kids,” Romero said.

“We need firefighters urgently, Civil Defence of the province, to have them helping us because we cannot maintain the order, we have no services of any kind.”

Meanwhile, the deputy secretary of Civil Defence of Salta, Ernesto Flores, confirmed one woman died and that “injured people” were being assisted at the local hospital.

Police sources said agents were already working in the affected areas checking on the damage caused by the earthquake and assisting the victims of El Galpón.

Télam reported also that Salta Governor Juan Manuel Urtubey and members of his cabinet were travelling to that locality to work in the area and put all the efforts at the service of the people there.

According to the National Institute of Seismic Prevention (Inpres), the tremor of 5.9 magnitude was registered as happening at 8.33 am this morning.
