Pontiff calls Chilean bishop detractors ‘lefties’

Pope Francis referred to detractors of Bishop Juan Barros of the Chilean city of Osorno as “lefties,” according to a video posted on the website of Chilean broadcaster Mega TV yesterday. Barros’ appointment as bishop in January has been controversial due to his alleged covering up of dozens of sexual abuse cases. “The Church has lost (part of its) freedom by allowing politicians to put ideas in the heads (of Church members), by judging a bishop without any proof after 20 years in service,” the audio of the supposed video shows. “Think with your heads and don’t be carried away by any accusations made by lefties,” he continued. The video recording was done by parishioners who at the time asked Francis to tape a personal message for them. More than 1,300 church members in Osorno, along with some 30 priests from the diocese and 51 of Chile’s 120 members of Parliament, have sent letters earlier this year to Francis urging him to rescind the appointment.
