Cuban forward Ariel Martínez has left the Cuban team before their Golden Cup quarter final game against the United States, in Baltimore. This is the fourth defection in the Caribbean team during the continental cup.

According to sources, Martínez was very happy the team beat Guatemala in the group stage and qualified to play against the hosts in the last-eight round. Coach Raúl González confirmed the defections but did not want to comment. “I am here to discuss soccer, not politics,” he told reporters.

Before Martínez, players Keiler García, Arael Argüllez and Dario Suárez Leith left the team while in the US, deciding to not return to their homeland and stay in the North American country instead.

After the 1-0 win against Guatemala in the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, Martínez returned with their teammates to their hotel. When they arrived, he took off the bus, hugged coach González and told him he decided not to stay with them anymore. Immediately, he ran away from the Cuban delegation.

His whereabouts are unknown. The Cuban team has not issued an official press release on the matter.
