Aerolíneas Argentinas pilots caught in negligence video fired

The two pilots and Vicky Xipolitakis in the video that sparked the Aerolíneas Argentinas controversy.

Aerolíneas Argentinas head Mariano Recalde confirmed the two pilots who appeared in a video allowing actress and model Vicky Xipolitakis to manipulate the Austral plane they were driving have been fired.

“These are responsibilities that have put lives at risk,” Recalde said vowing to act “firmly” and have “justice investigate” the incident.

“As soon as we became aware of the situation, we dismissed the pilots. They are two irresponsible people who put at risk the security of people and we will request justice to investigate, as the 190 article of the Penal Code expresses,” the president of Argentina’s flag carrier said in statements to the C5N TV news channel on Thursday night.

“We will act firmly because nothing justifies what happened, and it will have to be analyzed whether they committed a crime,” he said adding Xipolitakis will also face sanctions by the airline.

Later today, federal prosecutor Carlos Rívolo charged the two pilots and vedette Victoria Xipolitakis. Judicial sources revealed the prosecutor asked federal judge Sergio Torres to investigate the incident. Aerolíneas Argentinas also pressed charges against pilots Federico Soaje and Patricio Zocchi, as well as against Xipolitakis.

The crime, labeled "attack against aricraft security" imposes a sentence of two to eight years in prison.

Meanwhile, pilot’s union representatives of Austral airlines expressed their worries about the scandal, adding the situation was an isolated incident. The incident took place on flight Austral 2708 to Rosario from Aeroparque airport in Buenos Aires city.

Xipolitakis, a national celebrity, denied the tape was released on purpose to damage Aerolíneas Argentinas head Mariano Recalde, who is running for Buenos Aires mayor in two weeks.

“I never thought I could cause such harm. I am deeply sad. I had a wonderful experience in the flight and never thought it could cause such fuss. I didn’t do it with malice or second intentions; I make a reality show out of my life… I didn’t know I couldn’t go into the cock pit. The pilots should have told me not to. Now I recon my life has been in danger,” she tweeted.
