Banking workers confirm strike, demand 30-percent wage rise

Banking workers will be striking for 24 hours after union leaders said the sector’s business leaders “failed” to meet their salary demands. The walkout should be expected for the week of May 11-15, the exact date yet to be determined.

News were confirmed today by the Banking Association demanding a 30-percent rise and also accusing the government of “stigmatizing” workers that pay income tax.

In statements to media, Secretary General of the Banking Association Sergio Palazzo said workers will be starting this week a series of “assemblies with interruption of assignments during the last hours” of the working day.

“Our salary agreement expired in December and they had to call us by mid March,” Palazzo said. “We have been called (to the table of negotiations) two weeks ago and in three meetings they have brought no (salary) offer,” he pointed out adding wage hike “must be above 30 percent.”

“It has been resolved to start on Wednesday and Thursday with assemblies with interruption of assignments during the last (working day) hours,” Palazzo explained announcing a strike “for the second week of May.”

He also said the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner administration “makes” workers pay income tax “at the same lever of a multinational” company.

“Facing a shameless provocation, bankers start an action plan,” a statement released earlier in the week said.

“Without shame, more than four months after salary negotiations started to renew the wage agreement – that must be in effect from January 1 to December 31 of 2015 -, there is no offer by employers to overcome the loss in the purchasing power of our salaries nor a decision to modify or compensate the unfair income tax,” the same text read.
