Left-wing parties announce road blocks alongside general strike

The trade unionist movement aligned with the Socialist Workers' Party (PTS) will carry out a host of roadblocks and demonstrations in the City of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas, as part of a general strike planned for tomorrow across Argentina.

PTS militants will cut off access to the Pueyrredón bridge, which links Avellaneda with the city, as well as the Panamericana highway close to the Lear factory and entries to the Buenos Aires-La Plata motorway, among other key arteries for transport.

The announcement was made at a press conference held in Congress by Mendozan legislator Nicolás del Caño and marked the adhesion of the leftist party to the strike led by the CGT unions of Hugo Moyano and Luis Barrionuevo as well as transport leaders, groupings historically opposed to the hard left.

"Although we still have differences with the strike organisers due to their support of opposition parties and because we want to take other demands into account, tomorrow we will carry out an active strike with roadblocks and pickets," Subway Line B delegate Claudio Dellacarbonara confirmed alongside Del Caño  and other leading PTS figures.

Outside the Greater Buenos Aires area, party sympathisers and militants plan roadblocks in La Plata, Rosario and on the bridge that links Cipolletti with Neuquén. Córdoba, Jujuy, Tucumán, Mendoza and Mar del Plata are other major population centres expected to provide a focus for strike activity.
