Chief of staff Aníbal Fernández said workers’ demands to modify the income tax scheme were “fair” but pointed out the government was planning no changes because such a decision would be detrimental to all those “seeking to access the labour market.”

“Workers demand something that is fair. But the President (Cristina Fernández de Kirchner) must consider all and sometimes must know that these things can happen,” Fernández told reporters as he arrived in the Casa Rosada presidential palace this morning.

According to the ex senator, an amendment of income tax “would shut the door to all those who are about to enter the registered labour (market) and will be left outside.”

“We have tried to look for alternatives buy the position (of unions) seems to be implacable. If I can not stop it, I can not stop it,” Fernández said referring to the negotiations between the government and unions, refusing also to connect next week’s strike with the campaign ahead of October’s elections.

"It would be unfair a worker complained about income tax and I called it political.” Fernández considered unions were pushing to “improve the level of income of workers”.

“Every time you raise the income tax floor, you create a conflict for those who want to access the labour market. Those who have unregistered jobs seek with logical criteria to access the registered labour (market).”
