Aníbal Fernández sees agreement with transport unions 'possible'

Cabinet Chief Aníbal Fernández gestures during a meeting with leaders of trasnport unions at the government house.

Cabinet Chief Aníbal Fernández considered an agreement with transport unions “possible” ahead of the walkout they have announced for March 31.

On Wednesday, Fernández and Labour Minister Carlos Tomada received the representatives of the sector’s unions at the government house, seeking to settle a dispute that threatens to paralyze transport by the end of the month if workers mover forward with their protest action.

With unions demanding a modification of Argentina’s income tax scheme, the head of ministers today said he “will not promise what can not be resolved,” adding they spoke in “clear” terms.

“I think we can reach an agreement in the best way possible,” the cabinet chief said. “Not promising what can not be resolved; I will never do that, that is why we have spoken clearly and that is why I warned (...) that I did not accept any conditioning.”

Queried about a change in the tax regime, the cabinet chief explained President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner “monitors day by day the possibility of finding the best moment that a decision of these characteristics causes less damage.”

According to Aníbal Fernández, the government is working to protect both registered and non-registered workers who “contribute the same way as the one that was a registered job to the strengthening of the domestic market.” They both have rights, he insisted.

“At some point, the President will see when the thread turns shorter, narrower and makes the decision, to produce that balance, to harm the less people possible, who are about to access a registered job and that is why the concrete possibility is held up.”
