Williams sisters give US 2-0 lead over Argentina

Venus Williams hits a backhand during the game versus Paula Ormaechea, in the match between the US and Argentina for the Fed Cup played at the Pilar Tennis Club.

In the opening day of the Fed Cup match between the US and Argentina, Venus and Serena Williams beat Paula Ormaechea and María Irigoyen respectively, and gave the northern country a 2-0 lead over the south Americans.

Venus, ranked 11 in the world, beat Ormaechea (124) by 6-3 and 6-2 in one hour and 19 minutes. “It wasn’t a great game. She played a strong first set,” Venus told reporters after the match played at the Pilar Tennis Club. “I still can’t recover from my cough, though,” she added, but assured she will play on Sunday.

Then it was the turn for the number one female tennis player in the world, Serena Williams, to play her match against María Irigoyen, ranked 197.

Irigoyen did well in the first set, tying the match in 5 games each. But Serena then broke Irigoyen’s service and won 7-5. The second set was an astonishing 6-0 win for the youngest Williams sister.

Tomorrow, Serena will play Ormaechea and Venus will face Irigoyen. The series will then be closed with a doubles match between Tatiana Bua-Nadia Podoroska (Argentina) and Taylor Townsend-Coco Vandeweghe (US).

The winner of the series will play a match to enter the World Group, while the loser will play to maintain its place in the World Group II.
