Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich said that The American Task Force Argentina (ATFA) group, the lobby that represents the interests of holdout creditors, has “no dignity or moral authority to comment,” in response to the group’s criticism against president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s letter warning about “grave implications” after the appointment of ATFA co-chair Nancy Soderberg as Chair of the US Public Interest Declassification Board.

“It is shameful that officials in governments elected by popular vote are relevant actors in the activities of tiny groups of the financial system, vulture funds, that attack sovereign countries,” the chief of ministers said in his daily press conference at the government house.

He went on to accuse ATFA of “lacking moral suitability” and saying that their remarks “have no sense or grounding.”

ATFA has described Ms. Kirchner’s letter as “bizarre” and criticised its “condescending tone.” In a statement published yesterday on its website, the lobby group defended Soderberg as a “thoughtful advocate for Argentina to settle with its creditors”

“All of Soderberg’s written and public statements have been consistent – she has reminded President Kirchner that her own government has committed in writing to honor the rulings of U.S. courts—courts her government willingly ceded jurisdiction to,” the statements reads.

NO RESPONSE

Asked about the lack of official response to the letter from the US government, Capitanich aimed at the Obama administration’s “doubtful stance” in the matter.

“Vulture funds’ actions should be condemned by political leaders of all governments since they clearly distort the economic system, encouraging what the US in the end has been systematically validating: the biggest and most perverse income concentration in the world,” he stated.
