New WTC 'Freedom Tower' opens its doors in Manhattan

The "Freedom Tower", the main skyscraper of the new World Trade Center in New York City has opened its doors to welcome its first tenants today, with the transfer of part of the Conde Nast offices to the building.

The publishing giant plans to move around 3,400 employees to the Tower, where it has rented all the floors between the 20th and 44th. Although Conde Nast will be the building's main tenant, it will share the space with other organizations and companies.

With its 104 floors, the 542-meters high building dominates the skyline of lower Manhattan and has occupied the space left vacant by the destruction of the twin towers in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Intended to show the pride of New York's recovery after the tragedy, the tower and its needle are exactly 1,776 feet tall, in reference to the year of the US Declaration of Independence.

Adding a further patriotic touch, the tower has been nicknamed "Freedom Tower" but is officially known as One World Trade Center.

Giant glass and steel rises next to square-shaped waterfalls where the two destroyed towers used to be and are now a memorial monument dedicated to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attack.

Apart from rentals, the owners are relying on retrieving much of their investment with visits to the observatory that will open on top of the building next spring.

The observatory is estimated to attract more than 3.5 million people a year and by 2019 it will represent a quarter of One World Trade Center's annual income of u$s 53 million.

The construction of two other big towers is still underway.
