'We make the US responsible for the actions of its powers'

Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich reiterated the government’s claim for the US government to take responsibility for the actions of its judicial branch in Argentina’s longstanding legal battle against its holdout creditors.

The chief of ministers spoke in his daily press briefing at government house about the escalation of tensions with the US following president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s address yesterday, when she suggested that Washington could be plotting an attack against her.

“In the case of the judicial conflict under (the jurisdiction) of a municipal judge of New York, Argentina has defended its stance as a sovereign country,” Capitanich said, “and we make the US responsible for the actions of its powers.”

Asked about the future of Argentina-US diplomatic relations, the official said that Argentina’s “diplomatic relations with every country in the world are normal” but stressed that the government “defends (the country’s) sovereignty and sets limits to any type of direct or indirect interference in (Argentina’s) internal affairs.”
