Mayer gives Argentina lead over Israel

Argentine tennis player Leonardo Mayer hits the ball in the Davis Cup match against Bar Bozter of Israel in the Florida city of Sunrise.

Leonardo Mayer has beat Israeli Bar Bozter in 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and 6-1 and gave Argentina the first point in the Davis Cup match for World Group permanence held in the Florida city of Sunrise.

“Yaca” Mayer, ranked 25 in the ATP took less than two hours and a half to conquer the first point of the series against 776-ranked Botzer.

Carlos Berlocq (67) was following his team-mate, against world No. 84 Dudi Sela in the second singles.

On Saturday, meanwhile, doubles pair Federico Delbonis and Horacio Zeballos will take on two South American-born players with Israeli citizenship. Argentine native Jonathan Erlich and Uruguay-born Andy Ram will attempt to take down the local pair from 12.30 onwards.

Sunday's play sees tomorrow's matches switched round, with Berlocq tasked with defeating Botzer and Mayer taking on Sela.

The match is being played in the US as Israel was denied the Tel Aviv venue by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) due to the conflict over the Gaza strip.

This is Argentina captain Martín Jaite’s last match coaching the Albiceleste after three years in the Davis Cup team.
