USA destroy Slovenia to make World Cup semis

The United States basketball team has qualified easily for the semi-finals of the World Cup, coasting past Slovenia 119-76 to book a last-four clash with Lithuania on Thursday.

Klay Thompson stood out for Team USA with 20 points in a one-sided game, but a total of six players netted 10 points or more in a fantastic group performance.

Slovenia remained competitive until half-time despite starting as massive underdogs, restricting the scoreline to 49-45 two minutes into the third quarter. But the Europeans had no answer when the US stepped up a gear, paying the price for 25 turnovers and an abysmal rebound record, taking just 38 compared to the US' 53.

The North Americans will play the first semi-final of the FIBA World Cup this Thursday at 19.00 GMT (16.00 local time), against Lithuania, who prevailed earlier today 73-61 against Turkey to reach the last-four.

Tomorrow, hosts Spain will take on France and Serbia meet Brazil in the last two clashes of the quarter-final stage.
