Jaite chooses Davis Cup team in last match as Argentine coach
Argentine Davis Cup coach Martín Jaite has chosen the four players that will represent the South American nation against Israel in the US, in a match for World Group permanence to be played between the 12th and 14th of September at the Sunrise Tennis Club of Florida.
Leonardo Mayer, Juan Mónaco, Carlos Berlocq and Horacio Zeballos will play for Argentina, leaving Federico Delbonis out.
“It was a tough call. To tell a player that he will not be part of the team is one of the worst sides of being a Davis Cup coach,” Jaite, who is leaving the team after three years, told reporters today.
Mayer, number 26 in the ATP World ranking, will play first single, while the second single will be decided between Berlocq and Mónaco. Zeballos will play the doubles together with “Charly” or “Pico”.
Between Thursday and Friday, the Albiceleste team will travel to the US, where the match will be played as Israel canceled the Tel Aviv venue due to the ongoing conflict with Palestine in the Gaza stripe.
Israeli captain Eyal Ran has also decided its team. He called Dudi Sela, number 83 in the ATP, who beat Berlocq in the US Open, Amir Weintraub (number 242), Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.
