Lamela, Gaitán called up to injury-hit Argentina squad

Argentina coach Gerardo Martino has called up midfielders Erik Lamela and Nicolás Gaitán to his squad to take on Germany this Wednesday, after the new trainer saw his preparations for the friendly match disrupted by injury.

Lamela, who plays for Tottenham, and Benfica's Gaitán were drafted in to the team after four players were forced out through injury in the last few days. Lionel Messi, Maxi Rodríguez, Rodrigo Palacio and Ezequiel Garay have all been ruled out after examination by national team doctor Daniel Martínez.

Messi is suffering from an abductor strain picked up in yesterday's 1-0 win over Villarreal, while Rodríguez and Garay both broke down with Myalgia.

Palacio, meanwhile, had already been ruled out due to a trauma in his left ankle, and a lower back problem could yet see Ezequiel Lavezzi join the list of casualties.

The players who arrived today in the German city of Dusseldorf underwent a light training session. Hugo Campagnaro, Javier Mascherano and Ricardo Álvarez, meanwhile, participated today in the 'Game for Peace' sponsored by pope Francis and will undergo their first practice tomorrow.
