Zamora allies win Santiago del Estero polls, miss out on La Banda

Candidates allied to senator Gerardo Zamora have confirmed their control over the majority of districts in Santiago del Estero province following municipal elections, although key target city La Banda eluded the Civic Front.

The party, nominally radical but aligned with President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's Victory Front, lost out in Santiago's second-biggest city to Sergio Massa's Renewal Front. Running on a FR-allied Viable Movement ticket, Pablo Mirolo was confirmed as La Banda mayor over Kirchnerite candidate Mariela Nassif.

Early results suggest Mirolo took around 57 percent of the vote compared to 33 percent for the Civic Front, with turnout at 75 percent of the electorate.

The outlook was brighter for Zamora, whose wife Claudia Ledesma Abdala de Zamora is the current governor, elsewhere in the province as the politician's party underlined its standing at a local level, although in almost every district the leading candidates represented diverse sectors of the Civic Front.
