New coach Arruabarrena tastes victory over Vélez in Boca debut

Rodolfo Arruabarrena's tenure as Boca Juniors coach enjoyed a perfect start, as Carlos Bianch's successor saw his team fight back from a goal down to beat table-toppers Vélez Sarsfield 3-1 in the Bombonera.

The ex-Tigre and Nacional trainer watched as Boca, reeling after losing two consecutive matches, were hit by Jorge Correa's opener on the stroke of half-time. But the Xeneize did not give up, and fought back into the game during an excellent second half.

Daniel Díaz brought the hosts back into the game after the break, before César Meli was on target to put Boca 2-1 ahead. With Vélez seeking the equaliser, there was space for Boca to hit on the counter, and an excellent team move was rounded off by Andrés Chávez who fired past Sebastián Sosa to put the victory beyond doubt.

Arruabarrena's men were far better than in the last few matches that marked the end of Bianchi's third spell as coach. Even when Gonzalo Castellani was sent off towards the end of the encounter, the club stayed focussed and took a much-deserved victory, just the second in five games so far this season.

The win sees Boca climb up to joint-10th position with six points, while Vélez stay top despite today's reverse, their first of the campaign. If River Plate beat San Lorenzo in Bajo Flores, however, Marcelo Gallardo's charges could leapfrog the Fortín at the summit.
