Search efforts intensified for missing sailboat

Argentine naval authorities have stepped up efforts to find four citizens who have been missing since last Tuesday when a storm engulfed their sailing vessel, around the Brazilian port of Río Grande do Sul.

Today, the 'Gómez Roca' corvette-class ship left the Puerto Belgrano Naval Base to help with the search and rescue operation, which aims to find the four Argentines who were hit by the storm.

The P3 Orión airship was also operating today from the Ezeiza base, due to poor weather conditions in Río Grande do Sul.

Brazilian ship Tritao and the Argentina Rosales continued with the search, while aeroplanes passed constantly over the area looking for signs of the missing sailors.

Communications were cut off with the sailing boat, named the 'Tunante II', last Tuesday, when the vessel sent a distress call that proved to be the last contact made with authorities. The Tunante was hit by winds of more than 70km/h and waves that reached up to six metres in height.

Those aboard have been identified as Horacio Morales, Alejandro Vernero, Mauro Cappuccio and renowned optician Jorge Benozzi.
