Security Secretary Sergio Berni has said the shooting in the Pope Francis settlement located in the Buenos Aires City neighbourhood of Villa Lugano between Metropolitan Police officers and a group of drug criminals that happened earlier today is the consequence of “the badly executed eviction” of the area.

Seven Metropolitan Police officers were left with gunshot wounds as a result of the clash.

“There is no explanation why that sector, the most dangerous one, was not evicted. This [the shooting] is the direct consequence of the badly executed eviction,” Berni told reporters today.

“We entered the settlement with the Gendarmerie and waited for the Metropolitan police to evict that specific area. They didn’t do it. I’ve been trying to evict the sector since then, as reports assure it’s the most violent area of the settlement,” he added.
