Mayer out of US Open, no Argentines left
Leonardo Mayer has lost 6-4, 6-2, and 6-3 against Japanese Kei Nishikori in a match of the third round of the US Open in Flushing Meadows. With the loss, Argentina has no representatives left in the Open.
The 27 year-old Corrientes native, who will play first single for Argentina in the upcoming Davis Cup match versus Israel for World Group permanence, had beaten Spanish Albert Montañés and Australian Matthew Ebden in the first and second rounds of the final Grand Slam of 2014.
Meanwhile, UK’s Andy Murray swiftly took care of business in a 6-1 7-5 4-6 6-2 win over Russian Andrey Kuznetsov to reach the fourth round, and Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic squashed American Sam Querrey 6-3 6-2 6-2.
