Argentina defeats Puerto Rico in FIBA World Cup debut
Argentina national basketball team beat Puerto Rico 98-75 in its World Cup campaign in Seville, Spain. The match for Group B started at 12.30pm (Argentine time) at the Sevilla Arena.
Both teams faced each other two weeks ago in a four-team tournament in Serbia, where the team coached by Julio Lamas lost 97-87. They also played in the Pre-World Cup tournament in Caracas last year and Puerto Rico won 94-80.
Argentina and Puerto Rico reach the championship with different realities. Lamas’ side will be without San Antonio Spurs’ star Emanuel Ginóbili and the Los Angeles Clippers’ new signing Carlos Delfino, and will depend a lot on Indiana Pacers’ forward Luis Scola. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico will have its full squad available.
Apart from the absences of Ginóbili and Delfino, Argentina will not have Juan Gutiérrez, who plays in the Spanish League.
Argentina and Puerto Rico share Group B with Croatia, Senegal, Philippines and Greece.
Group A: Brazil, Spain, Serbia, Iran, France and Egypt.
Group C: Dominican Republic, Finland, New Zealand, Turkey, Ukraine and United States.
Group D: Angola, Australia, South Korea, Lithuania, Mexico and Slovenia.
