Colombian court allows gay adoption
BOGOTÁ — Colombia’s Constitutional Court ruled yesterday in favour of a lesbian woman seeking to adopt the biological child of her long-term partner.
It was an important victory for same-sex couples who hope to adopt, though the ruling does not apply to gay adoption in all circumstances.
The decision was backed by six of the nine judges whose decisions are final and therefore not subject to appeal, president of the court, judge Luis Ernesto Vargas, said at a press conference afterwards.
Ana Leiderman appealed to the court to let her partner, Veronica Botero, adopt her biological daughter after the Colombian Familial Well-being Institute rejected Botero's original adoption application.
