Perfect Vélez return to top after Lanús win

Having briefly surrendered the Primera División summit to River Plate, Vélez Sarsfield went back to the top with a 1-0 victory over Lanús, maintaining a flawless 100 percent record of four wins in as many Transición Championship clashes.

Home fans who braved the cold in Liniers witnessed a tense, scrappy clash with few chances of note. But with just eight minutes of play remaining, it was Vélez who grabbed the initiative to go ahead.

Striker Lucas Pratto surged through following a neat interchange with Milton Caraglio, and beared down on Lanús goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín. Pratto saw his first effort blocked by Marchesín, but made no mistake with the rebound to open the scoring in the 82nd minute of play.

The Grana pushed for an equaliser until the very end, with Oscar Benítez firing a decent effort just wide of the post. But Vélez held on for the three points, retaining their place at the top after another efficient display.

With 12 points, the Fortín lead second-placed River (10) after four rounds of the Transición. Racing Club trail in third with nine points, followed by Rosario giants Newell's Old Boys (eight).
