Sánchez, Teo send River to Primera summit

A Carlos Sánchez double in the first half and a late strike from Teófilo Gutiérrez helped River Plate to another comfortable victory at the start of the Transición Championship, as they dismantled Defensa y Justicia 3-1 to move to the top of the Primera División.

Confidence was high at the Monumental Stadium following Sunday's 4-0 thrashing of Godoy Cruz, and River were in no mood to let up as they attacked their newly-promoted opponents from the very beginning. Defensa were no pushovers, but after 30 minutes cracks began to appear.

Uruguayan midfielder Carlos Sánchez, who scored against his former club in Mendoza at the weekend, was on target to put his team ahead. Just 10 minutes later, in the final moments of the first half, Sánchez appeared once more to head home, sending River into the break two goals ahead.

The second half did not match the hectic rhythm established by both teams in the opening 45 minutes, but there was still time for Teo to add to his season's tally. The Colombia international struck 31 minutes into the second half for his fifth goal in four games, putting him at the head of the top scorers' list.

The Millonarios' win sees the team overtake Vélez Sarsfield and Racing Club at the top of the table, with 10 points so far. Vélez, however, could regain control of the summit with a win tomorrow at home to Lanús, as well as retaining their 100 percent record so far in the Transición.
