Delbonnis joins Mayer in US Open 2nd round, 'Machi' out in thriller

The second day of play at Flushing Meadows brought more mixed fortunes for Argentina's US Open hopefuls, as Federico Delbonis passed easily into the next round to join Leo Mayer while Maximiliano González was eliminated in a thrilling five-set marathon.

Azul native Delbonis, playing in his first ever US Open, had few problems today as he disposed of Noah Rubin in straight sets. The United States player had few chances to establish himself, and went down 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 to the Argentine who was in imperious form.

The 23-year-old, ranked 66th in the world by the ATP, used a thunderous first serve to impose himself over Rubin, firing down 12 aces over the course of the match. Delbonis also enjoyed eight breaks of service against his first-round opponent, who had reached the tournament as a qualifier.

Delbonis, who alongside Leo Mayer and Carlos Berlocq (who will play his first match tomorrow) is one of only three Argentine representatives still active in the singles tournament, will meet 26th seed Gilles Simon or Radu Albot, from Moldova, in the second round.

'Machi' González, meanwhile, pushed Sam Querrey (USA) all the way before finally losing his first-round match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 following just under three hours of play.

The Argentine, from the Buenos Aires city of Tandíl, struggled with his return, making 41 unforced errors to allow Querrey, ranked 25 places above González at 57th, to keep his nose ahead.

As a result 'Machi', whose excellent 2014 season had seen him break back into the top 100 after three years outside, could not replicate his record of 2009 and 2013, when he made the second round at Flushing Meadows.

González joins compatriots Facundo Bagnis, Juan Mónaco and Diego Schwartzman, as well as Paula Ormaechea in the ladies' tournament, in making an early US Open exit in the first two days of competition.
