Di María seals record move to Manchester United
The Red Devils, coached by former Netherlands trainer Louis Van Gaal, confirmed the news today on their official website, revealing that Di María had signed a five-year contract to play in the Premier League.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce that Angel Di María has completed his transfer for a British record fee of £59.7million. Angel joins on a five-year contract," United's statement explained.
Di María, meanwhile, praised the stature of his new club, stating that he would not have considered a move away from Madrid to any other institution.
"I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid form," he affirmed, adding that he was keen to work with Van Gaal, whom he defeated as part of the Argentina squad in this year's World Cup semi-final, albeit from the substitutes' bench.
"Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started."The Rosario native, who formerly represented Rosario Central, Benfica and the Merengue, is United's second Argentine signing of the current transfer window. Sporting star Marcos Rojo, a team-mate of 'Fideo' during the World Cup, also moved to Old Trafford as part of Van Gaal's attempts to renew a squad that last season missed out on Champions League football.
