Messi double leads Enrique's new-look Barcelona to victory

Argentina captain Lionel Messi showed that a gruelling World Cup campaign had not slowed him down, as the genius No. 10 hit two goals for Luis Enrique's Barcelona in a routine 3-0 win over Elche to mark the first match of the new Liga season.

Barca, who last season finished second under Gerardo Martino in the title race, enjoyed a perfect start under new coach Enrique, a former player at the Camp Nou who also trained the club's B team in a previous spell.

In the first half, Messi fired the Catalans ahead with a drilled left-foot finish. A red card for Javier Mascherano, shown for a professional foul, could not slow Barcelona down as they remained in complete control.

Teenage star Munir added a second just after half time with an excellent finish, and the rout was completed by La Pulga who popped up to hit another just after the hour mark. With Atlético and Real Madrid still to play their fixtures due to their Super Cup tie on Friday, the 3-0 win gives Barcelona control of the summit on goal difference on the Liga's opening weekend.
