'Rulings must be complied with in Argentina, everywhere'

Head of the Supreme Court Ricardo Lorenzetti is pictured during the ceremony to kick off judicial activities this year.

In Argentina and everywhere rulings must be complied with, Supreme Court head Ricardo Lorenzetti said when queried about judicial setbacks Argentina has recently suffered in the United States in its dispute against so called “vulture funds.”

“We can not give an opinion about a foreign judge neither we can about a ruling because we think that sentences must be complied with, in Argentina and everywhere,” Lorenzetti said in statements to media today.

With the federal government just defying a ruling by US District Court Judge Thomas Griesa moving to push in Congress for a change in jurisdiction to allow bondholders to collect their money in Argentina, Lorenzetti considered the country faces a “very difficult situation.”

“It is important we respect the autonomy and independence of Parliament to address the issue, to discuss it and consider different options,” the head of Argentina’s top tribunal said.

Unlike Lorenzetti, Supreme Court Judge Raúl Eugenio Zaffaroni did question fiercely the position of magistrate Griesa earlier in the week.
