Argentina Davis Cup captain Jaite to step down after Israel clash

Argentina's Davis Cup tennis captain Martín Jaite has named his final squad for the international tournament, after announcing that he will step down after the World Group play-off with Israel in September.

In a press conference held today, Jaite named Leo Mayer, Charly Berlocq, Federico Delbonnis and Juan Mónaco to take part in the tie, which will take place in Sunrise, Florida from September 12-14.

But the captain surprised reporters by confirming that he would not be leading the Argentina team beyond the clash against Israel, which the nation must win in order to preserve their place in world tennis' elite division.

"My goal was to fulfil my contract and not leave beforehand. It is not my decision nor the [Argentine Tennis] Association's, it is something we already knew would happen when the contract was signed," he explained.

Jaite reached two semi-finals as Argentina captain, in 2012 and 2013, but his tenure was marred by the ongoing dispute with the nation's No. 1 tennis player, Juan Martín Del Potro. In 2014 a first-round defeat against Italy condemned the side to fight for their World Group survival, the first time Argentina have faced a play-off since returning to the top division in 2002.
