First win for Gallardo since return
River claims a convincing 2-0 over Rosario Central at the Monumental
Coach Marcelo Gallardo had a wonderful afternoon in his return to the Monumental stadium as River Plate clinched a deserved 2-0 victory over Rosario Central with goals by Teófilo Gutiérrez and Leonardo Pisculichi.
River Plate clinched its first victory since Marcelo Gallardo took charge of the team after beating Rosario Central 2-0 at the Monumental stadium yesterday in a match for the second round of the Argentine league.
Colombian striker Teófilo Gutiérrez and forward Leonardo Pisculichi scored for the host, which had drawn 1-1 in the first round against Gimnasia in La Plata.
River improved a lot with midfielders Matías Kranevitter and Ariel Rojas in the first team. With Carlos Sánchez on the right side and Leonel Vangioni on the left, Gallardo’s team managed to create many scoring chances and dominate the game.
Central, on the other hand, played a poor match. It could not control the ball in the midfield and made defensive mistakes.
The host took advantage of that and went ahead in the 16th minute when Gutiérrez sent the ball home after Vangioni’s cross.
The goal was a morale boost for River, which continued attacking trying to extend its lead in the first half, but goalkeeper Mauricio Caranta denied all the scoring chances from his opponents.
Rojas had a clear opportunity to double the difference for the host. The former Godoy Cruz midfielder took a rebound in the box, but his shot hit the post despite the empty net. Caranta had left his position to block a shot by Sánchez.
In the second half, Central was forced to attack searching for the equalizer. River lost control of the ball and the visitors played with long passes. However, Gallardo’s team was very solid in defence.
River finally sealed the victory in the 79th, when Pisculichi took advantage of a defensive mistake and, with a fantastic solo play, left a defender behind in the area and scored with a fierce shot.
The team from Rosario could not cut its negative run at the Monumental. Central have not won in Núñez since its 3-1 win on August 31, 1997.
Gallardo left the field very satisfied with his team’s performance. “We did everything well. We could have sealed the win earlier. We are going to fight for the title.”
“Today (yesterday), we played a great match, especially in the first half. We dominated the game during the 90 minutes,” the coach added.
River’s archrival Boca Juniors was playing against Belgrano in Córdoba last night at press time.
