Facebook launches personalised gender in Argentina

Social media network Facebook has officially launched a new 'personalised gender' option for profiles in Argentina, in an event attended by the Argentine Homosexual Community (CHA), one of the principal backers of the scheme.

The launch took place in the offices of the company in Buenos Aires, located downtown at 1 Tucumán street.

There, Alba Rueda of the group 100 percent Diversity and Rights and Marcela Romero, representing ATTA, made use of the new option to customise the Gender option. The former opted for Transvestite, while the latter defined herself as "feminine trans."

"We are very proud for Argentina to be the first country in Latin America to present the personalised gender option, it is recognition of how advanced are country is in the achievement of rights such as the Civil Union Law, Equal Marriage and the Gender Identity law," CHA president César Cigliutti affirmed.

"Facebook's decision to consider sexual diversity in all its expressions also demonstrates this [recognition]."

Cigliutti added that "it was very exciting to see the word transvestite in a Facebook page."
