Condolences for Grondona take over social media
The news of AFA’s Julio Grondona’s death quickly found its way to Twitter and Facebook, where politicians, soccer players, and Argentine clubs expressed their condolences to Grondona’s family for their loss.
Argentine soccer icon Diego Maradona was one of the first to express his grief:
“My sincerest condolences to his family,” he wrote on his official Facebook profile, with a black and white picture of notably younger him with Grondona.
Football star Lionel Messi also shared a message on Facebook: “Really sad day for the football community, for Argentina and for me. Our AFA President, Julio Grondona, has left us. I want to send my condolences to the family and friends of the beloved”.
On Twitter, the governor of Buenos Aires province Daniel Scioli was one of the first to write. “Grondona was an important leader, both of Argentine football and of FIFA,” he twitted referring to his role as FIFA’s Vice President. “In the last World Cup he managed to gather players and the technical team […] behind a collective project”.
Soon, others in the football community joined the twittersphere with messages of condolences. FIFA’s President Joseph Blatter wrote: “[I am] very sad for the loss of a great friend. Julio Grondona left us at 82. I hug his family today. Rest in peace”.

Argentinean football leaders followed. Clubs like Independiente, Boca Juniors and Newell’s Old Boys expressed their condolences through their official Twitter account.
Meanwhile, San Lorenzo Vice President and TV magnate Marcelo Tinelli twitted: “A person me and my family cared for a lot passed today. Julio, thank you for the love you gave me for 37 years. I will miss you”.
