Colón spring latest Copa Argentina upset, Racing on form

Recently-relegated Colón de Santa Fe today became the latest team to knock out a higher-ranked opponent from the Copa Argentina, beating Primera División side Lanús 1-0 to reach the tournament's last-16 phase while Racing Club also advanced.

In a tight match played at Arsenal de Sarandí's home ground, the Sabalero triumphed thanks to a Facundo Callejo beauty in the second half.

The striker hit a delightful chip over the head of Lanús goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín 25 minutes into the half to crown a Colón counter-attack, marking what proved to be the decisive goal in a tight 90 minutes of football.

Lanús' defeat rounded off a disappointing week for the Copa Sudamericana holders, who on Wednesday suffered the agony of a Recopa reverse in extra-time against Brazilians Atletico Mineiro.

Colón, who were sent down to the Nacional B after losing a play-off against Atlético Rafaela, will play the winner of this evening's clash between River Plate and Ferro. The Santa Fe team also became the sixth lower-league club to knock out a top-flight opponent in the 2014 Copa Argentina.

Huracán defeated Boca Juniors on Saturday evening to join that list, while Argentinos Juniors downed Gimnasia de La Plata and Instituto prevailed over holders Arsenal to mark a productive round for Nacional B teams.

Estudiantes de Buenos Aires, in the Primera B Metropolitana, and Talleres de Córdoba of the Argentino A federal tournament, were even more successful giantkillers. The third-tier teams triumphed over the Primera's Vélez Sarsfield and Newell's Old Boys respectively to take their place in the last-16.

Diego Cocca's Racing, meanwhile, were able to avoid slipping up against lower-league opposition as they downed San Martín de San Juan 1-0 in San Luis.

Debutant Marcos Acúña headed home the winner in the second half to give La Academia a narrow victory, although the margin could have been greater had Cocca's men capitalised on a host of excellent chances.

Racing will face Argentinos Juniors in the next round.
