FIFA sanctions AFA over Malvinas flag

The Albiceleste shows the controversial flag.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has been sanctioned by FIFA with a 33 thousand dollar fine over the Malvinas flag displayed by players of the Albiceleste during a friendly match in La Plata a week before the World Cup, FIFA confirmed today.

In the match against Slovenia in Estudiantes de La Plata stadium, the players showed a flag that read: “Malvinas are Argentinean.”

FIFA considered the display broke “political behavior in stadiums and correct team conduct behavior” regulations and thus executed the fine against the Argentine Association.

This is the second time FIFA fines Argentina this month. The first time was a 340 thousand dollar fine issued because the team did not present any players for World Cup press conferences before the games.
