Maradona: Argentina played badly at 2014 World Cup
Argentine football icon and former Albiceleste coach during the South Africa 2010 World Cup Diego Armando Maradona say today Argentina played “badly” in the Brazil World Cup, and stated Messi had a better performance playing with him than with coach Sabella.
“Argentina played badly, if we made a team ourselves [meaning the people present at the interview] we could have also beat the group stage rivals,” Diego told reporters.
“Messi, on the other hand, had a better performance with me than with Sabella. He made us happy several times, but he did not have a good World Cup in Brazil. He played five times better with me than with Sabella, who says he made a sacrifice for the team, but that’s false,” he added.
Maradona affirmed that when he coached Argentina his players played good football, while Sabella’s team “only played good in the finals, and not so good.”
Asked about the future coach of the Albiceleste, Diego commented that neither Sabella nor Miguel Angel Russo are of his taste, and highlighted former national team coach and World champion César Luis Menotti is available, but has not got a job because he fought the “mobster in charge of AFA (meaning head of Argentine Football Association Julio Grondona).”
