Picket causes traffic chaos on Panamericana highway
The Panamericana highway at kilometer 31.5 in the Buenos Aires province locality of General Pacheco was once again blocked by workers of the Lear auto-parts company demanding the re-hirement of colleagues. Gendarmes were able to clear one lane of the highway but the tension was high.
Dozens of cars obstructed both ways of the Panamericana, in support of the laid-off workers. Drivers parked their vehicles on the road, causing a severe traffic jam.
Socialist leader Vilma Ripoll, who headed the picket, called for the Federal Labour Ministry to include the Internal Workers Comission in the negotiations between the company and the SMATA Mechanics Union.
