Ukraine: Exodus of Argentine football players continues

Metalist''s player Sebastián Blanco was among the first Argentineans who refused to stay in Ukraine.

Three Argentineans playing for Ukraine’s Metalist football club have refused to return to the crisis-hit country. José Sosa, Alejandro Gómez and Jonatan Cristaldo confirmed their decision to stay in Argentina saying their safety is not granted in Ukraine.

“It is irrational to stay in a country where we no longer feel safe,” Gómez was quoted as saying by the website. “No one gives us security in Ukraine,” he added.

Last week, midfielder Sebastián Blanco, also a player for the Metalist, refused to return to Ukraine following the pre-season training in Austria, the R-sport agency reported.

“After the downing of the Malaysian airplane, I have no intention of returning to Ukraine,” 26-year-old Blanco said referring to the jet of the Malaysian Airlines that crashed last week after it was hit by a missile, claiming the lives of 298 people. “Situation is not normal. I have decided to stay in Buenos Aires.”

The Shakhtar Donetsk club is facing a similar situation with six foreign players unwilling to head back to the Ukrainian league.

Following a friendly match against France’s Annecy, Brazilians Alex Teixeira, Fred, Douglas Costa, Ismaily, and Dentinho along with Argentina’s Facundo Ferreyra decided to leave the reigning Ukrainian champions.
