Government condemns Gaza, Israel violence

The Argentine government has condemned the recent wave of violence which has hit Israel and the Palestinian region of Gaza, speaking out against the acts committed by both sides in a conflict that has already claimed hundreds of lives.

"Once more, and for the third time in less than six years, civilian populations have been trapped in the middle of armed actions from Hamas and the disproportionate, excessive use of military force by Israel," a statement released by the Foreign Ministry today lamented.

The department headed by Héctor Timermán signalled that "Argentina sends a profound, pained tribute to all of the children that have been killed in the last few weeks."

"On July 12 the [United Nations] Security Council sent a clear message. It called for a de-escalation of the violence, so that calm could be restored and the ceasefire reached in November 2012 could be reinstated. It also firmly requested that international humanitarian law be respected and that civilians be protected," the missive continues.

"We vigourously condemn Israel, defying calls from the Security Council, the Secretary General and many other voices from the international community, for having decided to escalate the crisis launching a ground offensive. This decision will only create further instability in the region, more victims and more suffering.

"At the same time, we condemn the continued and indiscriminate launch of rockets from Gaza to Israeli cities," the Foreign Ministry underlined.

The statement called on those involved to "support the efforts carried out by Egypt and other regional and international actors to establish an immediate ceasefire."
