San Lorenzo advances in Copa Argentina
SAN LUIS — San Lorenzo defeated Almirante Brown from the First Division B yesterday and qualified for the last-16 round of the Copa Argentina.
At the Juan Gilberto Funes de La Punta stadium in San Luis, Edgardo Bauza’s team took the lead in the 36th minute with a goal scored by Matías Catalán , sealing the victory in the 64th with Martín Cauteruccio’s strike.
In the next round, San Lorenzo will face the winner of the series between Godoy Cruz and Defensa y Justicia.
Earlier, the club announced that it will end Carlos Valdés’ contract as the Colombian defender had not shown up to training sessions during the last days.
“We waited for him for a while; we are in the Libertadores Cup semifinals. San Lorenzo did everything right, we paid our debt and decided to end his contract,” the club’s sports director, Bernardo Romero, said yesterday.
San Lorenzo plays the first leg game of the cup semis against Bolívar of Bolivia at home on Wednesday.
RIVER LOSES. River Plate lost on Wednesday night against Millonarios of Colombia after a penalty shootout in a friendly in memory of former soccer star Alfredo Di Stéfano, who played for both teams and died on July 7.
The match in Bogotá finished 2-2, but the team coached by Marcelo Gallardo lost 4-3 in penalties.
Manuel Lanzini scored a penalty, and Bruno Urribarri netted for River, while Jonathan Agudelo and Anderson Plata scored for the Colombians.

RECOPA SUDAMERICANA. Lanús lost against Altético Mineiro 1-0 on Wednesday night at home in the first leg game of the Recopa Sudamericana.
At the Néstor Díaz Pérez stadium, Diego Tardelli scored the winning goal for the Brazilian side in the 21st minute. The return leg will be on Wednesday at the Mineirão stadium of Belo Horizonte.
The Recopa Sudamericana merges the winners of the South American Cup (Lanús) and the Libertadores Cup (Atlético Mineiro).
