Riquelme saga over: Román to play for Argentinos Jrs
Juan Román Riquelme, one of the greatest Boca Juniors players of all time, will play the next season for Nacional B division Argentinos Juniors, his first ever club, ending his contract with the Xeneize.
Argentinos coach Claudio “Bichi” Borghi revealed the news today, saying “everything is set” for Román to play in La Paternal.
The player will be officially presented on Saturday at 6pm at the Intercontinental hotel in Buenos Aires City and will join his new teammates on Monday for his first practice.
The 36 year-old couldn’t agree with Boca President Daniel Angelici over his renewal at Boca, after over a month of negotiations.
“We did everything we could to extend his contract, but sadly we didn’t reach an agreement in the financial sense. We then had a meeting with his manager and continued with the same differences,” said Angelici.
Riquelme started his football career in Argentinos, but did not make his debut in the First Division until he played for Boca. Borghi explained this was used to convince the former Boca playmaker.
“We had several meeting with him were we appealed to human and football identity arguments over economic ones,” Borghi, who also coached Riquelme in Boca, said.
As regards the financial cost of Riquelme’s contract, humble Argentinos will prepare a series of friendly matches to cover it.
