CFK to World Cup team: 'I felt immense pride'
President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner welcomed the Argentina World Cup team back home and thanked them for defending the Argentine colours. “As the President of 40 million Argentines I felt immense pride for how you defended the colours of Argentina,” she said at the AFA facility in Ezeiza, where she met with the squad.
“Congratulations, you were true lions,” the head of State said. She praised the players for showing “dignity, pride” and for “overcoming adversity”.
“Today I heard many Argentines here, outside, that said they did not give a penny for you at first but then decided to come welcome you because you had proved them wrong,” the president said. “You showed many people wrong. You showed them that being a team player and playing with passion you can achieve triumphs,” she added.
“We win when we are team players,” she stated.
The entire squad met the President right after landing in Ezeiza airport, where they were welcomed by thousands of fans.
