Spain's new king among mourners for Madrid legend Di Stéfano

Argentine native and football legend Alfredo Di Stéfano was laid to rest inside the Real Madrid stadium today, as mourners including the new king of Spain paid homage to one of the greatest players ever to live.

Felipe VI arrived at the chapel inside Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu stadium towards the end of an emotional day in order to pay his respects to the ex-River Plate and Millonarios star, whom he called an "irreplaceable figure, unique in this world."

"Today we all mourn him, he was an extraordinary person," the monarch explained to reporters, after greeting the family of the late idol at the wake as well as Madrid directors, including president Florentino Pérez.

Hundreds of people turned out over the course of a scorching day in Madrid to visit Di Stéfano, who yesterday passed away at the age of 88 after suffering a heart attack at the weekend.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas and defender Sergio Ramos were among the crowds, and paid tribute to the man who had been the club's honorary president until his passing.

"Saying Di Stéfano is like saying Real Madrid," Casillas affirmed, while Ramos said that "Di Stéfano's spirit" had guided the header which helped the club win a 10th Champions League title, including five consecutive trophies with the Argentine leading the attack in the 1950s, in this year's final.
