Argentina captain Lionel Messi was among the members of the national team who paid tribute to the late Alfredo Di Stefano, after the Real Madrid idol passed away today at the age of 88.

"Forever Don Alfredo Di Stefano, a legend, a giant on and off the pitch. Best wishes to all his family and friends," Messi, who enjoyed an emotional meeting with the ex-River Plate and Millonarios stars and Diego Maradona in 2009 which brought together three of Argentina's greatest talents, said.

Striker Gonzalo Higuaín also mourned the man who was Real Madrid's honorary president throughout 'Pipita's' time with the Spanish giants.

"A big hug to the Di Stefano family, a giant has left us, thank you for everything," the Napoli star wrote.

Right-back Pablo Zabaleta stated that "I never saw Di Stefano play, but without a doubt the world of football is mourning." Javier Mascherano, meanwhile, put simply "a football great has gone."
