Federal Court ratifies embargo on Menem's assets

A Federal Court today ratified an embargo on the assets of former president Carlos Menem in the investigation into the sale of the Rural Society property in Palermo neighbourhood in 1991. Menem and his former Economy Minister Domingo Cavallo were both indicted last April for embezzlement.

The resolution was signed last night by justices Horacio Cattani, Eduardo Farah and Martín Irurzun and confirmed an earlier ruling by judge Sergio Torres setting "an embargo on his assets until convering the amount of 10 million pesos."

A court ruling in April considered La Rural was sold at a "vile" price. Two other former government officials, two former Rural Society executives and six former private banking officials are also prosecuted yesterday, on a range of charges relating to the sale.
